I just don’t have that many friends…

Posted January 9, 2010

The twitter version of this post: I'm changing from a personal profile to a public page. That will enable me to interact with more people and will involve trimming my friend list.

I'm not sure I have as many friends as my Facebook profile says I have. In reality, I have a few friends, dozens of acquaintances, and lots of people that I care about but don't really know. So, I'm going to change my Facebook status.

Here's what I know about Facebook:

  • Facebook is a great place to connect with people
  • There are 2 basic types of "pages" where you make connections in FB: personal & public profiles
  • Personal profiles limit the number of connections ("friends") you can make
  • Public profiles can have an unlimited number of connections
  • You do not have to be a member of Facebook to access a public profile
  • Connections in personal profiles are called "friends", in public profiles they are called "fans"

Here's what I'm thinking:

  • I'd like to switch my profile to a public one now, before I reach the "friend" limit
  • I hate the idea of my "friends" becoming "fans"…but that's a Facebook deal…it is what it is
  • There are tools on the public profile option that will help us continue the connections in even better ways

Here's what the next two weeks look like:

  • I'm going to post this on my personal profile
  • I'm going to tweet this at least 2 times next week
  • I'm going to try to email this to as many of my "friends" as I can
  • I'm going to spam my "friends" at least twice to invite them to the new page
  • I'm going to ask you to hold your nose and click on the "become a fan" link on the new page
  • I'm going to "de-friend" all but a few friends and family on my personal profile

That's the plan. I hope you will join the conversation if you haven't already, or, if we are already "friends", follow me to a new location and lets continue it.

  1. I'll become your "fan" with pleasure. :)

  2. I just became a fan! I agree with your choice… I have more than 800 "friends" and even though I can adjust security settings, it always feels weird to post photos of my baby and update my status!

  3. Sounds good. Thanks for spelling it out. Many other pastors should follow suit.
